First Nations

  • From Time Immemorial

Before Terrace or any other northwestern BC town existed, First Nations people lived here surviving off the bounty of the region. Much like today, the Skeena River was the lifeblood providing food, transportation, water and a vehicle for a vibrant trade economy.

First Nations people have lived in northwestern BC for thousands of years. Before European settlers came to the Skeena Valley in the late 1800s, this region was one of the oldest continuously occupied areas in the world.

The nations located closest to Terrace are Kitselas (to the east) and Kitsumkalum (to the west), two of the seven Tsimshian tribes found in the northwest.

To the north is the Nass Valley; the heart of Nisga'a territory.

    Special Feature

Kitselas Canyon wins the Cultural Authenticity Award 2008 through Aboriginal Tourism BC.

The Kitselas Canyon National Historic Site, located just outside
Terrace, forms the heart of the Kitselas First Nation’s cultural
tourism and stewardship initiatives. Kitselas is one of seven Tsimshian
communities in northwestern B.C. The community is pursuing a vision of
making the historic site one of the area’s finest cultural tourism
destinations. Three longhouses and an interpretive trail now offer
visitors the opportunity to learn about ancient legends and stories.
Educational programs for schools and tour groups are designed to share
the land’s indigenous culture, create awareness for Tsimshian history
and maintain the ancient knowledge passed down through generations.
Exciting expansion plans are well underway to offer more tours and
guided cultural tourism experiences and excursions.

The annual awards program celebrates the business achievements of BC's
growing Aboriginal tourism industry. Each of the nine awards presented
recognize the commitment and dedication by Aboriginal individuals,
businesses and organizations, which have made extraordinary
    contributions to the industry.

Development tours will be offered in Spring / Summer 2008.  Grand opening of Kitselas Canyon is scheduled for Spring 2009.
