Gitselasu DancersThe Gitselasu, also known as the Kitselas people are one of seven Tsimshian First Nations communities in north-western BC. The Gitselasu have a fascinating history of establishing villages at the site of the historic Kitselas Canyon in the Skeena Valley.
Located approximately 15 km east of Terrace, the Gitselasu prospered from an increase in interest in the area by traders and settlers. The Gitselasu established a fortress in the canyon and controlled access to the ocean at this site.
Many Hands
Today, they have developed the canyon as a cultural tourism destination. There are many exciting projects on the go, including the construction of longhouses, landscaping and an interpretive trail that leads down to the viewpoint. They have also been working on new totem poles that represent the four main crests (eagle, raven, killer whale and wolf) and a wildlife display set in one of the longhouses.
Petroglyphs
The canyon is open in the spring for guided and unguided tours. Educational programs for local schools or premium tours that include traditional dances, salmon BBQ and a guided tour can also be arranged.
