Hiking - Moderate to Strenuous


Claque Mountain, 6km, Strenuous

From the Kitimat Chamber of Commerce, drive towards Kitimat on Haisla Boulevard and over the Haisla Bridge to the service centre. When you come to the Kitimat Hotel on Enterprise Avenue, turn right. Continue down this road until you reach the gravel road. Follow the gravel road over the railroad tracks and then turn right onto the Eurocan Logging road. Continue north on this road for approximately 1km. Turn left and follow the side road for approximately 2km. You will reach a wide-open area, park your vehicle here and continue up the mountain. The first part of the trail is very rocky and can be slippery. After approximately 2.5 hours you should reach the miner’s cabin. To get to the summit, follow the trail up a steep hill behind the cabin (approximately 45 minutes to the ridge). Walk along the ridge, through open country (1.5 hours) to reach the peak.

Gunsight Peak, 7km, Strenuous

From Terrace drive south for approximately 18km along Highway 37 to Furlong Bay Provincial Park campground. Turn into the gravel pit, across from the campsite and park to the side of the access road into the pit. Do not park in front of any gates or block access to the gravel pit. A moderate to difficult 7 km trail that leads to a scenic alpine lake and ridges. The first 3km of trail follows along the north side of Granite (Hatchery) Creek. At this point the trail crosses the creek and begins to climbs steeply for another 3km into alpine. The last half km takes you through an alpine meadow to Gunsight Lake. It is possible to continue upward to the peak, adding another 3.5 hours to your hike.

Maroon Mountain, 7.2km, Strenuous to Very Strenuous

Follow the Nisga'a Highway, north of Terrace, for 34.5km turn right onto the Wesach Creek Road, (1.3km north of the Maroon Creek bridge) and follow the signs for the next 4km (a 4x4 is recommended). The trail begins with a long, fairly steep climb through the timber before opening up into the sub-alpine. Experienced hikers can take the right trail at the fork to continue to the peak, the left would take you to the lake and old mining relics.

Mount Elizabeth
, Strenuous to Very Strenuous

Drive north on Highway 37 and turn right when you see the Mount Elizabeth sign (approximately 7.5km from the Kitimat Chamber/Visitor Centre). Stay on Eurocan’s Hirsch Creek Main Road for approximately 13km. The hike begins on the left 200m past the creek. There is a sign on the right indication the trail. Park your vehicle here and continue up the deactivated logging road on foot. There is a fork in the road, keep to your left. At the end of this road, approximately 3km from your vehicle, the actual trail starts on your left. A variety of trails are offered for different skill levels.

The Lookout: approximately 1.5 to 2.5 hours up the trail and provides are great view of Kitimat for those once in a lifetime photographs.

Little Elizabeth: continue from the Lookout which is another 2 hours of hiking. This is a hard hike up rocks and vertical hills. Trail is marked by circles spray painted onto the rocks.

Mount Elizabeth Summit: from the peak of Little Elizabeth expect another 1-1.5 hours of additional hiking time. Follow the trail due north, then down a small hill and up the summit.

 

 

Robinson Lake Trail, Moderate

Route 1: Start on the logging road passing the Kitimat Chamber of Commerce and drive for approxiamtely 1.9km and turn right onto Wathl Road. There is a "Wathl Main" sign in the trees that marks the start of the road. Approximately 1km from the start of Wathl Main Road there is a view of Kitimat. Drive along the Wathl Main Road for approximately 3.5km to reach the Robinson Lake trailhead (there are coloured ribbons on the side of the road). The trail is well marked. but use caution on the bridges as some are starting to rot. You will walk approximately 1 hour, then spend about 45 minutes going through swamp and meadows before reaching the lake.

Route 2: Turn off Highway 37 onto the Kitimat Village Road. Travel down this road for 2.3km and after crossing the Cordella Creek Bridge turn left into the gravel pit. Head up to the right and follow the road for 0.7km to the trailhead. The trail is 4km long and takes you past a series of small lakes before reaching Robinson Lake.

Sleeping Beauty Mountain, Moderate to Strenuous

From Terrace drive west down highway 16 until you get to the West Kalum Forestry Road, just after the Tempo gas bar. Drive up this road for 9km and you will see a road on your left. Follow this road another 10km to a pole stating the trail is just up ahead. 1.3km past this pole is the beginning of the trail. It is a 2.4km hike to the lake through steep terrain, and then turns to switchbacks for 1km. Meadows open up at the top with ponds. The peaks to the west are worthwhile, with some rock climbing opportunities and a small lake in a canyon. There are 3 peaks that are accessible. The 1st and 2nd are easy to reach, the 3rd (Sleeping Beauty peak) is several hours further.

Thornhill Mountain, 4.8km, Moderate to Strenuous

From the 4 way stop junction of Highway 16 East and Highway 37, drive 1/2 km east on Highway 16. Drive 6km along Old Lakelse Lake Road. 800m past the Thornhill Dump turn left onto the Copper Mountain road. Follow the Copper Mountain road for approximately 2.3km to the trailhead. The road continues up to communications towers on Thornhill Mountain. It is a moderate hike that follows an old mining trail for 4.8km to alpine and the old forestry lookout. Once into alpine there are panoramic views of the Skeena and Kitimat valleys.
